In Year One, we teach children using a thematic approach. Our topic changes each half term and the children’s learning is always supported by the use of a topic related role play area and an outdoor learning area. Some of the topics covered in Year One include The Seaside, Light and Dark, People and Places and Animals. We include class visits and invite visitors into school to enhance the children’s learning experience.

We cater for all our children’s learning needs and encourage an active learning approach (Pie Corbett-Talk for Writing). Talk for writing is a strategy that uses actions to retell a story. This helps to develop the children’s use of story language which they can then use in their writing. We have a wide and varied curriculum that is tailored to suit the needs of each child. We have a dedicated thirty minute session each day were children are taught phonic and reading skills. As well as all the above learning opportunities children also regularly visit the school ICT suite and have use the schools Wildlife Area to bring their learning to life.
